Marquip launches marine exhaust system required by IMO TIER III
According to Marquip, a Dutch manufacturer of underwater exhaust and water-cooled exhaust systems, the company is producing a marine exhaust system that meets IMO TIER III requirements for an Italian shipyard. Working closely with its partners, Marquip has developed a fully customizable module silencer/selective catalytic reduction system (SCR) that eliminates most harmful NOx compounds and efficiently reduces noise.
The muffler/selective catalytic reduction module will be mounted on Marquip's underwater venting water injection sheet. The silencer/selective catalytic reduction module will achieve a noise reduction of 35 dB(A) while meeting the IMO TIER III NOX emission limits. This marine exhaust system will be an exhaust system that meets the needs of users and engine specifications.
The first challenge facing this marine exhaust system is to remain within the maximum back pressure specified by the engine manufacturer. Adding post-treatment equipment to the exhaust system is particularly complicated and will have an adverse reaction to increased back pressure.
Marquip's specially designed underwater scoop will help to significantly reduce back pressure while maintaining a specified size range.
The second step is noise reduction. Noise reduction will be achieved by utilizing the high frequency noise reduction capability of the selective catalytic reduction device and supplementing with a dedicated low frequency muffler component.
The third and final step is to make the selective catalytic reduction unit suitable for marine use. Marquip engineers know from experience that in harsh weather, pressure pulses of up to 500 mbar waves will cause low cycle fatigue in the equipment.
It is understood that their intensity calculations show that the standard selective catalytic reduction device is broken after only 600 pressure pulses. Due to the corresponding enhancements to the design, its ability to withstand pressure pulses has increased dramatically.
Marquip has started production of a new silencer/selective catalytic reduction system and will deliver it in early September.
