Harvard researchers invented a robotic hand to grab gelatinous jellyfish

The robot may be a bit clumsy. When they carry boxes in the warehouse, their strong grip may not be a problem, but they can damage fragile marine life, such as jellyfish. Now researchers may have a solution. Researchers at Harvard University have invented a robotic hand that has a soft gripper and a gentle gripper that uses "silicone fingers like fettuccini" to grab and release fragile gelatinous jellyfish.

About 95% of the jellyfish are water, and the remaining 5% of the body is very fragile. Currently, most of the tools used to capture jellyfish in their natural habitat are developed for the offshore oil and gas industry, and when they attempt to capture jellyfish, they are often broken into pieces. In contrast, these silicone "fingers" are water-swellable and hydraulically used, preferring gentle gripping. According to the researchers, they exert less than one-tenth of the pressure on the eyes.

The device was developed at Harvard University's Wyss Institute and City University's Baruch College. Researchers have recently shared their findings on scientific robotics. They found significant researchability in jellyfish, such as green fluorescent protein (gfp), which is used to study gene expression. Some people believe that they can help us fight aging.

Jellyfish may not like to be entangled by fingertips, but will not be harmed during this process. The researchers tested the clips at the New England Aquarium, where they grabbed swimming moon jellyfish, jelly blubbers, and spotted jellyfish -- all of which are as big as golf balls. It is speculated that the jellyfish did not show any signs of stress, and the gripper was able to open and close about 100 times before showing signs of wear.

This technology can also help researchers collect and study other marine life and can promote the development of other soft robots. We've seen devices designed for space exploration and healthcare that are triggered by methods such as heat and air pressure. Soft robots are an ideal solution to help solve long-standing problems and can span a wide range of areas.
