Successfully developed a world-class 300,000-ton oil tanker

On April 27th, the development and design of the 300,000-ton super-large oil tanker of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission in 2004, undertaken by the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation 708 Research Institute, passed the project acceptance.

The ultra-large oil tanker (VLCC) is the most economical ship type for long-distance transportation of crude oil, and it is also the main ship type necessary for the international crude oil transportation market. Since the Chinese government approved the "strategic oil reserve plan" in 2003, the demand for VLCC is very urgent. With the support of the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, the 708 Research Institute and Jiangnan Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. are closely integrated to carry out independent research and development of VLé„„CC, with a 300,000-ton super-large oil tanker as a research platform, focusing on its design. The key technology has mastered the design method of super-large oil tankers and formed a group of core technologies with independent intellectual property rights.

According to reports, the 300,000-ton super-large oil tanker has a total length of about 330 meters, a width of 60 meters, a depth of 29.8 meters, a draft of 22.0 meters and a carrying capacity of 308,000 tons. The use of advanced computational fluid mechanics technology to optimize the hydrodynamics of the ship and optimize the main systems and equipment for the ship, thus greatly improving the speed and economy of the VLCC. In order to ensure the safety of the ship, the design concept of the ship's full life is proposed, that is, the overall safety of the ship is considered according to the maximum age of the VLCC. The self-designed VLCC has reached the world advanced level in the comprehensive index including fuel consumption, speed, load capacity and cost.

The cost of a single VLCC is around $100 million. At present, China State Shipbuilding Corporation has signed four VLCC construction contracts with China Yangtze River Shipping Group and the world famous shipping company Norwegian Frontline Company.
