Eaton Introduces Fuller Series 10 Speed Heavy Truck Gearbox

In February 2013, Eaton introduced the Fuller series of 10-speed heavy-duty transmissions , which have been improved in light weight, transmission efficiency, and fuel economy. In addition, improved smoothness in shifting also reduces preventive maintenance costs.

Fuller Advantage series transmissions include manual and automatic transmissions and will be put into mass production in the first quarter of 2014. According to Eaton personnel, this 10-speed heavy-duty truck gearbox is aimed at intercity delivery vehicles that require high-load operation, which can save a considerable amount of fuel.

The Fuller gearbox contains a sophisticated lubrication system and is one of the major technological advances for the new gearbox. It can reduce 33% of the energy loss in the process of mixing oil in the common gearbox. Due to the excellent performance of the lubrication system, the heat generated by the gearbox during operation is relatively low. Therefore, the cooler and its corresponding cables and accessories are not required in the Fuller gearbox.

The new Fuller gearbox has reduced the weight of 75 pounds compared to the previous generation of cast iron housing thanks to the use of an aluminium gearbox housing. The specific weight reduction cannot be determined because the previous generation transmission was equipped with coolers from different suppliers. The new Fuller gearbox can improve the fuel economy of the vehicle. After testing the third-party test results, it concluded that its fuel economy is 1.9% higher than that of the previous-generation gearbox. The Fuller series gearbox also saves on material costs. A new oil detection mirror is installed on the gearbox to monitor the amount of oil. In addition, the lubrication system always uses only 16 pints of lubricant to operate in the system, which is half that of conventional gearboxes.

The specific technical upgrade of this gearbox includes:

- Peak torque increased from 1,288 Nm to 2,508 Nm

- 6 bolts on the power output shaft

- 10 overdrive gears and 2 reverse gears

When the transmission is mass-produced, its manual version will include 17 different levels of configuration transmission ratios from 15.42 to 17.53.
