Pirelli and Milan Bica University continue to work together to develop environmentally friendly tires

Pirelli and MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY continue to work together to develop environmentally-friendly tires. The newly-incorporated company, CORIMAV, has recently renewed its contract. The company is committed to research on advanced materials. Since its inception in 2001, CORIMAV has achieved an average of one each year. Patents.

On October 18, 2016, Milan - a patent was born each year, 44 student scholarships and 36 doctoral scholarships, all of which focus on advanced innovative materials research. This is a remarkable achievement of CORIMAV. In 2001, Pirelli and MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY established CORIMAV, a joint venture company. At a recent event, CORIMAV announced the renewal of the event. Pirelli’s CEO Troon Kitty and MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY’s Principal Cristina Messa attended the event.

Founded 15 years ago, the CORIMAV project aims to develop cutting-edge technologies using new materials, related research and development, and ultimately for patent applications. It also helps young scholars in training and professional development. Today's exciting project has opened a whole new chapter. In the past few years, CORIMAV and Pirelli have grown, and research projects have also evolved.

Initially, the CORIMAV project awarded scholarships in three areas: nanocomposites, energy transfer, and molecular modeling. Three years ago, the Italian government’s dedication to the establishment of a research-oriented doctoral degree in close cooperation with industry, and the academic cooperation between Pirelli and MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY are also expected.

Since 2005, CORIMAV has provided doctoral scholarships for more areas of research and has also introduced more continuation and structural projects. From 2010 until now, the project has turned more towards the tire sector: this is clearly the core of Pirelli and its strategy. Therefore, this cooperation is mutually beneficial to both MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY and Pirelli. One of the advantages of the CORIMAV project is the development of highly professional engineers who can be immediately employed by Pirelli R&D.

Since the beginning of the project, about 20% of the scholarship winners have chosen to work for Pirelli, and the company has funded a full-time researcher who will be responsible for coordinating the scientists of the CORIMAV project. This position has been held by Barbara Di Credico since 2015. It is worth mentioning that the research activities funded by Pirelli are aimed at inorganic materials that can be used for the vulcanization of tire formulations.

The most successful recent examples are Luciano Tadiello and Antonio Susanna. The two researchers joined Pirelli R&D and contributed to the patents of two new tire energy-saving materials through the CORIMAV project.

In recent years, the focus of the CORIMAV project has been to study new materials for the production of environmentally friendly tires. This includes the most innovative, but also patent-protected, projects: use lignin to produce tires and reduce the impact on the environment. Lignin is a natural material that has antioxidant properties that can be used to aid in the mechanical performance of tires after being altered by physical and chemical means, and to replace fossil derivatives (such as carbon black).

The green philosophy of CORIMAV is not limited to tire production and use, but also concerns the recycling of scrap tires. Researchers have discovered a new biological desulfurization method that can scrap tires with bacteria and other biological agents. Thanks to this recent study, it is possible to remove sulfur-carbon bonds while isolating bacteria, so that the way in which tire components are handled can be effective in recycling.

Enrico Albizzati has been the project manager for CORIMAV. Once he was the head of Pirelli's material innovation department, and now he is Pirelli's science and technology consultant.

CORIMAV represents the outstanding performance of the newly established Bicocca Park at MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY: it is a center for research, culture and industry. The cooperation project now funds three doctoral scholarships in nanotechnology and research fields each year. At the same time, it also organizes management and intellectual property courses for other subjects, as well as specific subject courses, which are taught by Pirelli employees. This is also another means to open up more and more comprehensive cooperation between academics and industries.

Geographically speaking, MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY and Pirelli are very close. There was once a bridge connecting the main building of Pirelli and the teaching building of MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY. Today, this bridge is built of ideas, knowledge, and innovations that lead to the future. Cristina Messa, president of MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY said, “As the cooperation of CORIMAV continues to be updated, MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY and Pirelli once again emphasized the investment in the research and development of emerging materials. Since then, CORIMAV has conducted in-depth industry research projects and high-level professional training, such as an industrial doctoral degree. This close cooperation with CORIMAV is an indispensable part of the development strategy: Pirelli and Milan Bicocca University ( MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY), together with other partners, is a leader in technology and innovation. Thanks to the Bicocca Park project, a brand new network of academic institutions and commercial companies, we can exchange professional skills and development opportunities while enhancing Services and rich professional development."

Pirelli's Vice President and CEO, Tron Katie commented, "The cooperation between Pirelli and MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY proves that the cooperation between commercial companies and academic institutions can stimulate the common development of technology and economy. We and Milan The close cooperation between MILAN BICOCCA UNIVERSITY's world-leading and different professions not only helps us to realize our innovative ideas but also optimize our products."
