Russian scientists develop technology for extracting lithium from waste

Experts from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys at the Russian National Research University have built an industrial experimental device that extracts lithium from ore waste and used lithium-ion batteries. The cost of the end products will be lower than that of similar products imported from abroad.
Lithium is one of the lightest metals and is the main component of lithium-ion batteries. Without it, mobile phones, computers, cameras and other devices will not work. According to HSBC analysts, the global demand for lithium metal in 2015 is 170,000 tons, and may increase to 420,000 tons by 2020. Australia, Canada, Brazil, and China extract lithium from solid minerals, while Chile and Argentina extract lithium from brines, which are highly salinized in mines located in arid regions. The only lithium mine in Russia is the Zavikinsk mine in the eastern part of the post-Baikal. Lithofene was mined there from 1941 to 1997, but now lithium is no longer mined and refined in Russia, and lithium metal and its compounds are imported.
Experts from the Department of Nonferrous Metals and Gold of the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys at the National Research University have developed a lithium-containing acid treatment technology and have completed the extraction of lithium from fluorite ore rock samples and spent lithium-ion batteries. The technology will be put into industrial application at the fluorite mine in Primorsky Krai and the Zavikinsk mine in the post-Baikal Territory. It is estimated that after 20 years, more than 40,000 tons of lithium carbonate can be produced through this process, thus meeting the domestic demand of Russia as a whole, and getting Russia out of raw material imports.
The new technology enables the extraction and processing of lithium to be processed in parallel, not only to produce pure lithium, but also to produce various lithium salts according to domestic industrial needs. The equipment is currently in the commissioning phase and its basic testing will take place in the fall of 2017.
